You Can Eat Healthy and Have Fun At the Super Bowl Buffet Table

One of the best things about Super Bowl Sunday is the buffet. The commercials get a lot of hype, but everyone loves the food. We have suggestions for your buffet— but though you may be indulging in extra snacks that day, remember do it in moderation if you want to stay on track with a healthy lifestyle.

WebMD.com says “At a time when nearly 65% of men and women in the U.S. are overweight or obese, the biggest football game of the year will provide them with yet another opportunity to overindulge.”  That’s a daunting thought. Why do some people have to ruin our fun?  Well you can still have fun and eat healthy,

Healthy Lifestyle pageEveryone has their own version of a “healthy lifestyle” and you should tailor your Super Bowl food to what is best for you. If you are a low carb person, set out some cheese and meats like little smokies or meat balls. If you are a low calorie person, be sure there is a veggie tray and maybe some fruit.  If you are on Weight Watchers, find the foods that will work for you that day.

We have found many good recipes for low carb breads made with almond flour or a chocolate fruit dip made from low calorie syrup and diet hot chocolate mixed together. You can make things like fried pickles and other great suggestions from Suzanne Corbett our Travel/Food Editor but if  you balance the buffet out with other options,  you won’t gorge only on the fried items– because what’s a Super Bowl spread without some fried pickles,  wings or fast food?

You can disguise your “healthy” food and make it fun. Our Travel/Food editor suggests a cheese ball in the shape of a football.  Take the time to figure out what you can eat with a low carb lifestyle– if that’s what you want– and then make the cheeseball but offer carrots and celery instead of or along with the crackers.

Wings are one of the most popular items on a Super Bowl buffet and they can also be healthy. Plain wings that you don’t dip into any sauce are a healthy alternative and parried with seasoned or fried wings and sauces, the plain ones provide a healthy alternative.

That chocolate low cal dip made from the diet hot chocolate mix looks great when displayed on a chip/dip serving tray with lots of healthy fruit around it.

The Super Bowl is a long day so just gage your time and plan your eating and you can have a fun day without winding up disappointed in yourself that night when you can’t sleep or the next morning when you realize what you did the day before.
