It wasn’t a surprise, but it was still very exciting as the new ownership stepped up at the press conference on Tuesday to announce that St. Louis indeed did get an MLS (Major League Soccer) team.
The press conference was held at the Palladium in Lafayette Square Tuesday morning, with a happy hour later in the day at Urban Chestnut Brewing.
MLB Commissioner Don Garber was in town and on hand to deliver the announcement.
“It is with great pride that we welcome St. Louis to Major League Soccer,” said Commissioner Don Garber. “St. Louis is a city with a rich soccer tradition, and it is a market we have considered since the league’s inception. Our league becomes stronger today with the addition of the city’s deeply dedicated soccer fans, and the committed and innovative local ownership group led by Carolyn Kindle-Betz, the Taylor family, and Jim Kavanaugh.”
The St. Louis team, will be the 28th team in the MLS, and will begin play in spring 2022. They will play in a new stadium to be built just west of Union Station.
Four members of the new St. Louis franchise ownership group posed for photos following the announcement ceremonies that St. Louis has been awarded an MLS franchise. Owners from (L to R) are Patty Taylor, Jo Ann Taylor Kindle, Carolyn Kindle Betz, and Chrissy Taylor. This group is the only all female owned franchise in Major League Soccer.
“It’s Official! St. Louis is a Major League Soccer (MLS) city!” wrote Mayor Lyda Krewson on her Facebook Page. “First game at new stadium coming 2022. Thanks to Commissioner Don Garber for choosing St. Louis.
