Kyle Gibson pitched out of a first-inning jam and the Cardinals scored late to beat the Diamondbacks 5-1 on Wednesday at Busch Stadium. It was their first win this season in the final game of a series, having started the year 0-7.

Before the game the Cardinals optioned struggling outfielder Jordan Walker and left-hander Zack Thompson to Memphis. Walker was hitting just .155 with no home runs and only four RBIs.

The Cardinals will have the day off today before beginning a road trip to New York and Detroit on Friday night with the first of three games against the Mets.
