Wednesdays Game Report: Dodgers 14, Cardinals 3
The Cardinals road trip lasted one game too long.
One start after throwing six no-hit innings, Carlos Martinez could not get out of the first inning on Wednesday night as the Dodgers sent 14 batters to the plate and scored 11 runs, something they had never done since moving to Los Angeles in 1958.
Martinez gave up 10 of the runs, allowing six hits and four walks. He left with the bases loaded and two outs before Jake Woodford gave up a grand slam to Cody Bellinger to cap the monster inning.
Martinez became the first pitcher in Cardinals history to allow 10 runs while pitching less than one inning. Bellinger drove in six runs in the inning.
The 14 runs by the Dodgers were the second most the Cardinals had allowed in a game in Los Angeles. They allowed 16 runs on May 6, 1983 in a 16-10 loss.
Here is how Wednesday night’s game broke down.
At the Plate: Paul Goldschmidt homered in the first, actually giving the Cardinals a brief lead and Dylan Carlson homered in the fifth. They also got an rbi double from Nolan Arenado in the third. The Cardinals pulled both Arenado and Goldschmidt from the game in the third inning… Tyler O’Neill extended his career hight hitting streak to 10 games with a single in the second.
On the Mound: The grand slam by Bellinger was the only hit allowed by Woodford in 2 1/2 innings… The final three runs came off against Tyler Webb…Five pitchers combined to walk 10 batters in the game.
Looking Ahead: After going 5-5 on the roadtrip, the Cardinals will be back at Busch Stadium on Thursday night to open a four-game series against the Reds. Adam Wainwright will get the start.
