Tuesday’s Game Report: Brewers 6, Cardinals 0
By Rob Rains
After being overwhelmed by Jacob Misiorowski in the series opener in Milwaukee, the Cardinals were hoping for better results on Tuesday night.
They got more hits, but couldn’t score, as they lost to the Brewers for the second game in a row.
A five-run fifth inning knocked starter Michael McGreevy out of the game and broke open a 1-0 game.
The Cardinals were shut out for the fourth time this season, the third time in their last eight games.
Here is how Tuesday night’s game broke down:
At the plate: The Cardinals had seven hits, all singles. In the first two games of the series they are combined 9-of-63, all singles, and have scored one run … The only Cardinal with two hits on Tuesday night was Bryan Torres, who also got robbed of a hit on a leaping catch by shortstop David Hamilton … They only had three runners reach second base, and they were 0-of-5 when they did get a runner to second base … Four of the seven hits came from the final three spots in the batting order, the two by Torres and one each for Yohel Pozo, who was the DH, and Victor Scott II.
On the mound: McGreevy gave up a home run to Jake Bauers leading off the fourth, then was knocked out of the game without getting an out in the fifth. He gave up a double, walked two and then allowed a two-run double to William Contreras … After Ryan Fernandez relieved, he gave up a three-run homer to Garrett Mitchell … Justin Bruihl worked two scoreless innings and Matt Pushard worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning.
Key stat: The Cardinals have lost six of their last nine games on the road.
Worth noting: Fernandez was added to the roster after Brycen Mautz, as expected, was optioned to Memphis … Lars Nootbaar had an RBI double in three at-bats for Springfield on Tuesday night … Joshua Baez hit two homers, his 13th and 14th of the season, as part of a four-hit, five-RBI night for Memphis. Blaze Jordan also had four hits, raising his average to .329. Hunter Dobbins allowed one run over 4 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts … Jacob Odle, who has been one of the best pitchers in the organization so far this season, was promoted from Palm Beach to Peoria.
Up next: Dustin May will get the start on Wednesday as the Cardinals try to avoid being swept in the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 12:40 p.m.
