Saturday’s Game Report: Brewers 3, Cardinals 2

Quinn Mathews has spent the last month trying to show the Cardinals why they should be planning on him being a part of their starting rotation next year.
That was the case again on Saturday night, even though one pitch cost him a chance at a victory.
Brice Turang tagged Mathews for a two-run homer in the fifth and the Brewers protected that margin for the rest of the game to get the win in Milwaukee.
Mathews allowed five hits over his five innings, walking two and striking out seven.
In his last six starts dating back to Aug. 28, Mathews has allowed 11 runs in 35 1/3 innings with 33 strikeouts. He has not allowed more than three runs in any of those starts.
The win improved the Brewers’ record against the Cardinals to 10-2 this season, including a 5-0 mark in Milwaukee.
Here is how Saturday night’s game broke down:
At the plate: The Cardinals only had three hits in the game, one a home run by Alec Burleson off his former teammate, Dustin May. It was Burleson’s 26th homer and his 116th RBI of the season … Thomas Saggese drove in the other run for the Cardinals with a single … Their other hit was a single by Jordan Walker … They struck out 15 times with every starter striking out at least once. Leo Bernal struck out three times … Burleson’s 116 RBIs are the most by a Cardinals’ lefthanded hitter since Stan Musial had 126 RBIs in 1954.
On the mound: Relievers Gordon Graceffo and Cade Winquest kept it a one-run game over the final three innings, blanking the Brewers despite allowing a combined three hits and three walks.
Worth noting: Masyn Winn was a late scratch from the lineup because of continuing soreness in his thumb and hand. He will not play on Sunday.
Up next: The Cardinals will play their final game of the season on Sunday, with Andre Pallante getting the start.
