The Bananas play their own version of baseball called Banana Ball, a fast-paced, action-packed style of baseball with rules that include no bunting, a two-hour time limit, fans catching foul balls for outs, batters stealing first base, and a one-on-one tiebreaker showdown at the end of the game if it’s tied.

City Museum is also going Bananas

The City Museum is getting in on the shennanigans with an Official Guinness World Record Attempt for the Largest Gathering of People Wearing Banana Hats on April 2 at 5:30 pm.

City Museum is no stranger to official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ titles. Last spring St. Louisans helped set the record for Largest Gathering of People Wearing Underwear on their Heads (that record has since been broken). Next week, with the Savannah Bananas heading to town, it’s time for City Museum to Go Bananas and attempt another record.
On Wednesday, April 2 — with an official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS adjudicator on-site — City Museum and Explore St. Louis will attempt to break another record: Largest Gathering of People Wearing Banana Hats.
Since there was so much demand for head-adorned underwear last year, City Museum is offering a pre-sale on tickets that guarantees an opportunity to participate in this event. These limited tickets include General Admission for the day, plus exclusive participation in the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title attempt from 5:30 to 7:30 pm in Architecture Hall on the 3rd floor.  Order tickets here.
Since the City Museum event is before the Savannah Banana’s appearance, fans could wear their banana hats to the game.
Mentioning Bananas making you hungry?

Our Food/Travel Editor, Suzanne Corbett has come up with a few banana recipes to celebrate the fun.

Watermelon Banana Split

2 bananas

1 medium watermelon

1 cup fresh blueberries

1 cup diced fresh pineapple

1 cup sliced fresh strawberries

1/4 cup caramel fruit dip

1/4 cup honey roasted almonds

Peel bananas and cut in half lengthwise then cut each piece in half. For each serving, lay 2 banana pieces against sides of shallow dish. Using an ice cream scooper, place three watermelon “scoops” in between each banana in each dish. Remove seeds if necessary. Top each watermelon “scoop” with a different fruit topping. Drizzle caramel fruit dip over all. Sprinkle with almonds. Makes 4 servings.

Big Easy Upside down Bananas Foster Cake

1 yellow cake mix

bourbon

1 1/2 sticks butter, melted

2 cups dark brown sugar

2-3 bananas

1 cup toasted pecans pieces

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Mix cake according to package directions, replacing bourbon for the water that’s call for on the package directions.  Place melted butter on the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking pan or divide between two 8-inch round cake pans. Melted butter should cover the entire bottom of the pan. Sprinkle brown sugar over butter, top with a layer of sliced bananas and sprinkle with pecans. Bake for 35 –45 minutes or until cake is done when tested using a wooden pick. To test for doneness, insert pick in center of cake – if it come out clean the cake is done. Remove from oven and let cool five minutes. Run a knife along the sides of the cake pan to loosen, then place a serving platter/platter over top of cake and turn over. Carefully lift off pan.

Recipe makes one 9×13-inch cake  or two small 9-inch round cakes.
