Former Cardinals catcher and Cardinals and Kansas City Royals manager Mike Matheny entertained a crowd of about 300 people in the auditorium of the St. Louis County Library on Friday March 28, 2025. He was there to talk about his new book, “The Dad Coach: How to Lead Kids to Succeed On and Off the Baseball Field”
Matheny, who played 13 years as catcher for four MLB teams including longest with the Cardinals did a question and answer session with broadcaster Randy Karraker and then they opened it up for questions from the audience.

He talked about how he enjoyed managing and coaching over the playing. After his playing day, he coached the Westminster Baseball team and put together a team for one of his sons which he managed for years and used as a basis for the book. After that he went back into professional baseball as a manager, first with the Cardinals, then with the Royals.
When he was talking about coaching he said he looked for several attributes in a player.
“Are they hungry, available and teachable?” he said. “Those are important qualities I look for in a baseball player. Humble is also another.”
