Sunday’s Game Report: Mets 7, Cardinals 4

By Rob Rains

The movie “Lost in New York,” the sequel to “Home Alone” came out in 1992. The Cardinals produced a new sequel this weekend.

The Mets completed a sweep of the four-game series against the Cardinals on Sunday, breaking a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning and dropping the Cardinals to 1-9 on the road this season.

The Cardinals lost their eighth consecutive game to the Mets dating back to last season and were swept by the Mets In a four-game series for the first time since 1986.

Brandon Nimmo drove in the go-ahead run after the Cardinals had tied the game in the top of the seventh on a two-run double by Thomas Saggese.

Nimmo’s big hit came an inning after he leaped over the left field to take a home run away from Jordan Walker.

Here is how Sunday’s game broke down:

At the plate: After being held to just three hits through the first five innings, the Cardinals scored in the sixth when Brendan Donovan led off with a double, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Alec Burleson’s groundout … In the seventh, Nolan Gorman led off with a single, pinch-hitter Luken Baker walked and both Gorman and pinch-runner Michael Siani scored on Saggese’s two-out double … Their final run came in the ninth on an RBI single by Lars Nootbaar, the first hit for the Cardinals’ leadoff hitters in 15 at-bats in the series … The Cardinals struck out 11 times, with Walker fanning three times.

On the mound: Sonny Gray allowed a home run to Francisco Lindor leading off the first and gave up two more runs as he pitched through the sixth inning, throwing a season-high 102 pitches … Nimmo’s go-ahead single came against Phil Maton after JoJo Romero allowed a single to Lindor and walked Juan Soto … The Mets broke the game open with three runs in the eighth off Ryan Fernandez.

Key stat: The Mets’ top three hitters – Lindor, Soto and Pete Alonso – were a combined 16-of-46, a .348 average, with three homers and 11 RBIs in the four-game series.

Worth noting: Nolan Arenado had a scheduled day off, with Gorman getting the start at third … The Cardinals had six extra-base hits in the four-game series and Saggese had three of them, all doubles, with Donovan hitting their only home run and a double … The team was a combined 4-of-27 with runners in scoring position in the four games … Masyn Winn played what is expected to be the final game of his rehab assignment in Memphis, going 0-of-3 and drawing a pair of walks.

Up next: The road trip will continue on Monday night with the first of three games against the Braves in Atlanta. Erick Fedde is the scheduled starter.
