Wednesday’s Game Report: Cardinals 6, Orioles 4
By Rob Rains
The rain lifted in time for the Cardinals and Orioles to play on Wednesday night – and the Cardinals were glad it did.
Brendan Donovan hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning to help the Cardinals rally from a 3-0 deficit to get the win in the series finale in Baltimore.
Donovan’s homer, his fourth of the season, followed a double from Masyn Winn, who had a four hits and scored three runs, that pulled the Cardinals within one run.
The win moved the Cardinals to eight games over .500 at 32-24, their top record this season. They have gone 18-5 in their last 23 games.
Here is how Wednesday night’s game broke down:
At the plate: Jordan Walker’s two-run single in the fourth inning drove in the Cardinals first runs … They added another run in the seventh on an RBI double from Ivan Herrera … Lars Nootbaar had two hits and scored a run and combined with Winn’s four hits and three from Donovan, the top three hitters in the lineup were a combined 9-of-15 … Donovan raised his season average to .335 with 69 hits in 53 games.
On the mound: The Orioles built their early lead off Miles Mikolas, who also allowed a fourth run before leaving the game after four innings … The Cardinals used five relievers to cover the final five innings. Kyle Leahy pitched around a hit and two walks and John King, Phil Maton and JoJo Romero also worked a scoreless inning before Ryan Helsley earned his 12th save. Helsley gave up two hits in the ninth before finishing off the victory.
Key stat: In his last 11 games Walker has gone 11-of-33, a .333 average, while driving in 10 runs. Five of his hits have been for extra bases.
Up next: The Cardinals have a day off on Thursday before continuing the road trip on Friday night against the Rangers in Texas. Matthew Liberatore is the scheduled starter.
