Tuesday’s Game Report: Dodgers 12, Cardinals 6
By Rob Rains
The Cardinals got another poor start out of Miles Mikolas on Tuesday night, and the finish from Ryan Fernandez and Andre Granillo wasn’t any better.
Mikolas allowed five runs, including three home runs, and lasted just three innings in the loss to the Dodgers in Los Angeles.
Despite another struggling performance from Mikolas, the Cardinals trailed only 5-3 going to the bottom of the seventh but the combination of Fernandez and Granillo allowed seven runs over the next two innings to turn the game into a blowout.
Max Muncy and Teoscar Hernandez each hit two home runs for the Dodgers and each drove in four runs in the 17-hit attack.
Here is how Tuesday night’s game broke down:
At the plate: Nolan Gorman hit a two-run homer in the second and singled and scored in the seventh … Willson Contreras hit his team-leading 16th home run in the eighth and the Cardinals scored their final two runs in the ninth without a hit, taking advantage of two walks, a hit batter, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Alec Burleson.
On the mound: Mikolas gave up a home run to Muncy in the first inning, when the Dodgers scored twice, and back-to-back home runs to Muncy and Herandez in the third. Mikolas allowed seven hits, walked one and needed 67 pitches to record nine outs before leaving the game. He has now allowed 21 home runs this season and is 2-7 in his last 10 starts … Matt Svanson and Gordon Graceffo kept the game close for the next three innings, striking out a combined six batters … Fernandez retired only one of the four hitters he faced, walking two, and Granillo allowed the two inherited runners to score and then gave up the second home run to Hernadez and allowed seven hits and four runs of his own while recording five outs.
Key stat: This was the first time the Dodgers have had two players each hit two home runs in a game against the Cardinals at Dodger Stadium. Thirteen players had a two-homer game, but all came in separate games.
Worth noting: The Dodgers also had five doubles to go along with the four homers, finishing with nine extra-base hits … Mikolas is 0-3 in three career starts at Dodger Stadium and has allowed a combined 12 runs in 13 2/3 innings in those games … Five of the Cardinals’ recent draft picks made their professional debut for Palm Beach on Tuesday night.
Up next: Matthew Liberatore will get the start on Wednesday in the final game of the series and the road trip. Shohei Ohtani is scheduled to start for the Dodgers. First pitch is at 3:10 p.m. St.Louis time.
