Interesting Tidbit about the skaters

The U.S Figure Skating Committee uses therapy dogs as a way to help pre and post- performance jitters.

Meet Aspen, the three-year old rough collie, shown left. She, and some of her comrades from Pet Partners have a big job to do. Aspen is a therapy dog owned by Jennifer and Richard Bolduc (shown in the insert).

Richard Bolduc is Aspen’s handler through  the organization Pet Partners and they were contacted through Nulo Pet Food company about volunteering at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, saying that they needed therapy dogs. The young skaters trying to make the Olympic team are often scared and ful of anxiety but hugging a dog like Aspen can calm down jittery nerves.

The therapy animal area will offer athletes a chance to engage with therapy dogs a sa way to relax, recharge, and manage performance-day stress.

Since 1977, Pet Partners has registered and supported thousands of volunteer therapy animal teams who have made millions of meaningful visits around the world that help improve the physical, social, and emotional lives of both the people and animals involved. The handlers like Bolduc are excited for their participation and the dogs look forward to playing a part in the Olympic trials. For more on Pet Partners: CLICK HERE.

More on the skaters: U.S. Dominated ISU Grand Prix Final

The United States captured gold in four events in last weekend’s ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final in Japan, claiming titles in three of the four senior disciplines for the second straight year.

Ilia Malinin added his name to the history books once again by tallying a new world record free skate score and becoming the first-ever athlete to cleanly land seven quadruple jumps in one program in winning his third straight gold at the Final.  Also making history, Madison Chock and Evan Bates earned gold to secure their seventh Grand Prix Final medal, the most of any ice dance team in the history of the event.

Reigning women’s world champion Alysa Liu clinched gold in her Grand Prix Final debut. This marks the first time the U.S. has won back-to-back golds in the women’s event since Tara Lipinsky won consecutive titles in 1996 and 1997.

The Wheel is open from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. daily.

Enjoy a figure skating-themed Freak Shake at Soda Fountain at Union Station. The shake includes a Championship logo sugar cookie, a blue and white Whirly Pop and a souvenir American flag. This limited edition Freak Shake is available at Soda Fountain, January 7 – 11.
