Cards Right Fielder Jordan Walker says goal of losing weight in the off-season will help him

Jordan Walker got to Jupiter about a week and a half ago but he said he was a little slow in getting started with his workouts due to illness. He said he had just gotten back to working out in Jupiter two days before he had to leave for St. Louis for the Winter Warm-Up and it appeared he was feeling better despite having a few lingering cold-like symptoms.

“It’s been pretty good so far,” he said of the workouts.

In the off-season Walker said he had a goal of losing some weight, which he felt he had done. He said he felt lighter and that the weight loss would help him but unfortunately when he got sick he lost a little more weight, so he’s looking forward to getting back down there to start his workouts. Last year he said he fluctuated between 265 and 267 but this off-season he has kept it  around 260 (before getting sick) and that’s where he wants to stay.

Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium is under construction so players are working out at an alternative site, which they have worked at before, so that is where Walker is training at this point.

One aspect of his game Walker is working on is base stealing, and also being more of a leader in the clubhouse.

“I’m definitely going to try to speak up a little more,” he said when the conversation turned towards the lack of veterans in the clubhouse and with the offseason moves it is more of a younger team and he may be called up on for leadership.

He also said that more of the younger guys will be speaking up, but it won’t be a problem since so many of them have played together before, whether on the Cardinals or going through the system.

“It’s great to have that team chemistry,” he said. “We played together in the minor leagues.”
