LEADOFF QUICK HITTERS

SATURDAY, MAY 30, 2026

The Cardinals got home runs from Nelson Velazquez, Thomas Saggese and Ivan Herrera and a big night from the bullpen to beat the Cubs 6-5 on Friday night in the opener of their three-game series at Busch Stadium. Velazquez hit a three-run homer in the first inning in his first at-bat for the Cardinals after he was promoted from Memphis before the game. Saggese's first homer of the year tied the game and the homer from Herrera gave them the lead.

Before the game the Cardinals called up Velazquez and Jimmy Crooks and optioned Cesar Prieto and Yohel Pozo to Memphis.

Kyle Leahy will get the start tonight in the second game of the series, which will be televised by Fox.
