Saturday’s Game Report: Giants 8, Cardinals 4

Giants’ starter Madison Bumgarner had to come out of the game in the third inning on Saturday night but the Cardinals were unable to take advantage of his early departure.

A grand slam by Austin Slater off Miles Mikolas in the fourth inning sent the Giants over the Cardinals in San Francisco, snapping the Cardinals’ three-game winning streak.

After scoring one run in the first inning, the Cardinals were not able to score again until after the Giants had built an 8-1 lead going to the eighth inning.

Here is how the game broke down:

At the plate: Paul Goldschmidt had a big night in the loss, driving in all four of the Cardinals runs. He singled in a run in the first inning before hitting a three-run homer, his 16th of the year, in the eighth … The Cardinals had six of their 10 hits in those two innings … In addition to Goldschmidt’s two hits, both Jose Martinez and Dexter Fowler also had two hits.

On the mound: Mikolas gave up five runs in four innings as his record fell to 5-9. He has won only one of eight starts on the road this season … Daniel Ponce de Leon pitched two scoreless innings in relief, but Tyler Webb was tagged for three runs as he allowed four hits and only recorded two outs in the seventh … John Brebbia worked the final 1 1/3 innings.

Worth noting: Goldschmidt has now hit safely in his last six games and has recorded an extra-base hit in four consecutive games. He has driven in six runs in the first two games in San Francisco, which is one more than he had driven in in his previous 32 games covering 115 at-bats … Yadier Molina was out of the starting lineup for the third consecutive but was able to pinch-hit and got a single in the ninth inning.

Looking ahead: The Cardinals will play the final game before the All-Star break on Sunday. Jack Flaherty will get the start.
