Monday’s Game Report: Blues 3, Maple Leafs 2

There were a couple of significant facts about the goal scored by Alex Pietrangelo in the third period Monday night for the Blues in Toronto.

The most important of those for Pietrangelo was that the goal broke a 2-2 tie, giving the Blues a 3-2 win.

The goal, however, also was the 400th point of his career and was the 23rd game-winning goal of Pietrangelo’s career, breaking a tie with Hall of Famer Al MacInnis for the most by a defenseman in team history.

Pietrangelo’s goal came at 7:51 of the third period and Jordan Binnington, an Ontario native making his first career start in Toronto, was able to protect the one-goal margin for the rest of the game.

Binnington had 32 saves as the Blues improved to 2-0-1 to start the season. They also got goals from Oskar Sundqvist and Brayden Schenn, with Schenn’s goal with 48 seconds left in the second period tying the game at 2.

The Blues’ trip to Canada continues on Thursday night with a game in Ottawa.
