Goal from Sundqvist in third period sends Blues to win over Lightning

Much of the pre-game buildup for Tuesday night’s game between the Blues and Tampa Bay Lightning was about the return of hometown hero Pat Maroon.

Maroon’s goal in the second overtime gave the Blues a game seven win over Dallas last season en route to winning the Stanley Cup. Tuesday night’s game was the first game back in St. Louis for Maroon since he signed as a free agent with the Lightning.

During a pre-game ceremony Maroon was given his Stanley Cup ring, but then the Blues got down to the business of trying to win the game.

Oskar Sundqvist helped make that happen with his goal early in the third period, which broke a 1-1 tie. David Perron scored the first goal for the Blues, while Jaden Schwartz added an empty-net goal in the closing minutes.

The Blues outshot the Lightning 34-18.

The Blues will host the Calgary Flames at Enterprise Center on Thursday night.
