Game Report: Stars 2. Blues 1 (shootout)

For the third consecutive game in the round-robin qualifying games to determine seeding for the first round of the playoffs, the Blues had a one-goal lead going into the third period Sunday against the Dallas Stars.

For the third consecutive game, they lost the lead and the game.

Dallas scored with just 31 seconds in the third period to tie the game, then won it with the only goal in the shootout.

As a result, the Blues – who had the best record in the western conference before the season was stopped in March because of the coronavirus pandemic – will open the playoffs as the number four seed. They will take on the Vancouver Canucks in the series, which will begin either Tuesday or Wednesday.

Jake Allen got the start in goal for the Blues and made an early goal from Robert Thomas – on the Blues’ first shot of the game – stand up until the Stars tied it after pulling their goalie for an extra attacker. Allen was screened on the play and had no chance to stop the shot by Joe Pavelski.

In their three games, the Blues were out-scored 6-0 in the third period.

In the regular season, the Blues did not lose a game in regulation that they led going into the third period.

The Blues had only 13 shots on goal in the game.
