The much-talked-about solar eclipse is this Monday, April 8. It begins at 12:42 PM (St. Louis time) with the peak event at 2 p.m. The Cardinals have a home game on Monday, starting at 6:45. By that time the whole eclipse show will be over, but the eclipse did affect the schedule of the Yankees- Marlins game on Monday. The Yankees were set to host Miami at 2:05 p.m. but the start was pushed back four hours  to 6:05 p.m.

What is a total solar eclipse? Check out the St. Louis Science Center for more: CLICK HERE.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon completely blocks out the face of the sun during the day. The sky darkens as if it were dawn or dusk, and you are able to view spectacular sights like the solar corona.

Where can I experience totality?

What will you see in St. Louis on April 8th?

The St. Louis area will experience a partial solar eclipse. At maximum eclipse, approximately 99% of the sun will be blocked by the moon.

Even with 99% of the sun’s light blocked, it is still unsafe to look directly at the sun without protection.

Eclipse Start: 12:42 p.m.  CDT

Maximum Eclipse: 2:00 p.m. CDT

Eclipse End: 3:17 p.m. CDT

Duration of Eclipse: 2 hours, 34 minutes

Travel to locations in the path of totality if at all possible!

While it will be experienced in the Greater St. Louis Area, this solar eclipse will provide portions of southeast Missouri with a “Total” Solar Eclipse with nearly double the length of totality experienced in the August 2017 “Great American Eclipse.” There seemed to be a lot more hoopla surrounding the one in 2017 but people are realizing this is a big one and according to MoEclipse.org—  “The next ‘Great American Eclipse’ is August 12, 2045 and only a tiny sliver of southwest Missouri will be in the path of ‘Totality.'”

On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. Totality of this eclipse can be viewed in our region by traveling to southern Missouri and Illinois.

Eclipses are rare so if there is no cloud cover it will be spectacular and worth taking the time out to see it. “On October 14, 2023, an annular solar eclipse crossed North, Central, and South America. If not for the clouds that day, this eclipse would have been visible in St. Louis as a partial solar eclipse.”– St. Louis Science Center.
