Editor’s note: We know with all the young players on the team this year, the fans want to know as much as they can about them. As we mention some of the players who played in the game for the Cardinals — the top prospects in the organization–  we’ll add the  link to the stories Rob Rains has written about them. The Cardinals prospects defeated the Nationals prospects 9-8 in the “Spring Breakout Game” that followed the regular game. Before the game, many of the players sat at tables and signed autographs for the fans. The line was so long that they had to cut it off so the players could get to the game.

The line went from the tent down a ways on the concourse and then up the steps into the stadium.

Fans enjoyed getting to talk to the players, and a good number stayed for the game.

Former Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright surprised the crowed by being introduced. He sat down on the field level for a few innings.

In the game, the Cardinals  prospects got home runs from Joshua Baez, a two-run shot, and Ryan Mitchell in a 9-8 win over the Nationals.

Tanner Franklin allowed one run over three innings and JJ Wetherholt reached base three times on two hits and a walk.

Joshua Baez’ homer was a two-run shot. Baez had homered in the breakout game two years ago as well.

Liam Doyle started but did not finish either the first or second inning being charged with four runs, three of which scored after he came out of the game. He struggled with his control, walking four.

Doyle started the game but didn’t finish the first or second inning due to pitch count. He threw 52 pitches and was credited with one inning.. He was charged with four runs, three of which were scored after he came out of the game. He walked four.
