There is a special night coming at Busch Stadium to highlight the lives of two prominent Black achievers, and Rob Rains and STL Sports Page are honored to be a part of it. Rains is working with the Dred Scott Heritage Foundation to spread the word about this event.
“When Lynne Jackson told me about this and asked me to join in her efforts I said yes, of course,” said Rains. “Lynne has these two famous people in her bloodline: Dred Scott and Oscar Charleston. Due to this tremendous platform, she has worked so hard to promote reconciliation and healing between Blacks and whites– and that’s a cause I can easily support. I hope if you are reading this, you will consider buying some tickets to the Cardinals game on June 16th through the link given in this article.”
Everybody in St. Louis knows Dred Scott was a courageous freedom fighter; and many school children in St. Louis take field trips to visit the Old Courthouse which is where the “Dred Scott Decision” was handed down. Because of the efforts of the Dred Scott Heritage Foundation there is now a statue of both Dred and Harriet Scott in front.
President of the Foundation, Lynne Jackson, her family, and her foundation work tirelessly to make sure the general public is educated about Dred Scott. She grew up knowing he was her fourth great-grandfather, but only recently did she find out she is a great-great niece to a Negro Leagues player– Oscar Charleston.
“He is my great, great uncle on my Mom’s side, Jackson said. “After his playing days he was a scout for Branch Rickey, at the same time he was looking to integrate the major leagues so maybe he had something to do with signing Jackie Robinson.”
Lynne Jackson is shown, right with Virgal Tyrone Woolfolk, a Black history author who is on the committee for the special night at the ballpark.
Along with Dred Scott, Oscar Charleston was also a remarkable person. Charleston was a centerfielder and then a manager in the Negro Leagues, and in fact he was known to be one of the greatest players in the Negro Leagues.
Charleston, who was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1976.
“’Charlie’ was a tremendous left-handed hitter who could also bunt, steal a hundred bases a year, and cover center field as well as anyone before him or since…he was like Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth and Tris Speaker rolled into one.” – Buck O’Neil
There is a star on the “Missouri Walk of Fame” in Marshfield, Missouri for both Dred Scott and Oscar Charleston. For more on that, CLICK HERE.
With Dred and Harriet Scott being two of the most important people in Civil Rights history and the Negro Leagues contributing to so much of Black history, Jackson and her foundation decided to have a special day at the Cardinals game the week of Juneteenth.
As it says on the Gateway Arch’s website: “One of the most important cases ever tried in the United States was heard in St. Louis’ Old Courthouse. Dred Scott v. Sandford was a landmark decision that drove major change to the entire country’s history. The Supreme Court decided the case in 1857, and with their judgement that the Missouri Compromise was void and that no African-Americans were entitled to citizenship, hastened the Civil War which ultimately led to freedom for the enslaved people of the United States.”
“We are asking your support in this exciting celebration as we cheer for our heroes and cheer our Cardinals on to victory against the San Diego Padres,” said Lynne Jackson. “This is a fundraiser for our foundation.”

Section 132/133 tickets are discounted at $25.00 and can be purchased by scanning the QR code or clicking here.
Paid attendees will receive a framable souvenir ticket and an Anniversary rally towel at the game. There will be even more fun in the section if you are among the first 300 to purchase your tickets.

Tickets are on sale now. Jackson asks everyone to help spread the word by sharing this article, share to Facebook, Instagram and X (formerly Twitter). Invite groups, families and organizations. (Some are buying a block of tickets (your choice of how many) and selling or giving them away.)
If they sell 500 tickets, there will be a special recognition for the Foundation on the field
If you buy a ticket you will receive an email with your ticket through the Ballpark App by June 9th to be presented at the ballpark.
