For the third time this season, Missouri’s game on Saturday came down to the final play of the game. This time, it finally went the Tigers’ way.
After losing on last-second plays against South Carolina and Kentucky, Missouri finished off a 33-28 win over Vanderbilt in Columbia when the Commodores’ fourth-down pass attempt fell incomplete in the end zone as time expired.
Drew Lock passed for two touchdowns and also scored on a 3-yard run midway through the fourth quarter which gave Missouri its first lead of the game. The play capped a 14-play, 99-yard drive.
Vanderbilt had a 28-26 lead and had a first down and goal from the 4-yard lead late in the third quarter but Missouri’s defense stopped four consecutive running plays to keep the Commodores out of the end zone.
Lock and the Tigers took over on downs, and converted three times on third down to keep what turned out to be the game-winning drive alive.
A missed 31-yard field goal by Tucker McCann gave Vanderbilt the ball back at its own 20-yard line with 1:48 to play and the Commodores were able to drive to Missouri’s 25-yard line before two consecutive incompletions ended the game.
The win was the sixth of the season for Missouri, making them bowl eligible. It also continued their recent string of success in November, having won eight of their last nine games in the final month of the season.
Lock finished with 22 completions on 33 pass attempts for 253 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown pass to Damarea Crockett and a 20-yard scoring pass to Daniel Parker. Lock also was intercepted twice.
Crockett also ran for an 8-yard touchdown and finished with 122 yards on 22 carries.
Vanderbilt’s KeShawn Vaughn rushed for a career-high 182 yards on 15 carries, including a 65-yard touchdown run, and also scored on a 4-yard pass.
Missouri will be on the road next Saturday at Tennessee.
