Cardinals announce Chaim Bloom will play a larger role

Hello Friends,

The Cardinals made the transition from John Mozeliak to Chaim Bloom as the president of baseball operations on Monday – but it won’t happen for a year. Bloom agreed to a five-year contract which will begin when Mozeliak’s current contract expires and he retires after the 2025 season.

Bill DeWitt, Jr.,  Bill De Witt IV, Mozeliak and Bloom held a press conference at Busch Stadium, which we attended.  Much to the disappointment of some of the fans (evidenced by your comments to me or on social media) it was announced Mozeliak will be back in his same role for the 2025 season.

Bloom will spend the year overhauling the Cardinals’ player development system, hiring additional personnel and upgrading technology available to players and coaches. To read my article on this, CLICK HERE.

Happy Oct. 1– It’s former President Jimmy Carter’s 100th Birthday. I was actually at the game he says was his favorite Braves game. We have an article up on the site right now and I share my memories of that time and we have quotes from one of Jimmy Carter’s grandsons. CLICK HERE.

It was sad to hear of the death of “Hit King” Pete Rose. Mike Rains got to spend a day with him years ago and he shares his memories below, so be sure to read that part.

October is National Pizza Month and last week we teased it. We got to go behind the scenes at Dewey’s Pizza and to see that video and also get a fresh recipe of “Pizza Sticks” from St. Louis’ Cookie Rookie, Becky Hardin, CLICK HERE.

The photo to the left, is Dewey’s Bronx Bomber, topped with a little of everything.

Speaking of pizzas, Sally and I love “Make Your Own Pizza Night” and we included our tips for making healthy pizza that are delicious in the above mentioned article When we have a night at home at the end of an eventful day we will make our own pizzas and it’s something fun to look forward to– and you can add your own ingredients to suit you individual tastes.

With October comes all the spooky and not-so-spooky Halloween events. As usual, we encourage you to support your community and go out and enjoy the season. We’ve compiled an article with what to do in it. The photo is Halloween featured ice cream from Clementine’s.  CLICK HERE.

We will continue doing our “Rains on the Cardinals” podcasts throughout the off-season. There will be much news and we’ve always got something to talk about with the Cardinals. During the season the newsletters usually come out on Thursdays because it’s often an off-day, but we will send out emails on any day that we feel we have information to share with you that is worth your wile to open it up.

We would like to add a sponsor to our line-up. You see how loyal we re to our sponsors (and they are loyal to us!), so if you know of someone you could help us get to come on board as an advertiser, please let us know. Our advertisers are happy with us but it is hard to introduce someone not familiar with the website to all the ways we promote them.

Please email us at Rains@STLSportsPage.com if you have any ideas. Our advertisers keep our content free for our readers. We work very hard to bring you interesting, positive and Journalistic quality content so any help you can give us in return would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for reading!

I worked with Pete Rose for one day

When the news of Pete Rose’s death came out yesterday (Sept. 30) I was sorry to hear it and it reminded me of some very fun memories I had with him earlier in my baseball career. In 2015, when I was the Media Relations Director for the Normal CornBelters a team in the Frontier League at the time, Pete Rose did a promotion and was “Manager for the Day.” He was friendly and generous in signing baseballs.
I was in charge of him and it was a lot of fun.
I was very grateful for the opportunity to get to spend  time with Pete Rose.  He was one of the nicest people I have worked with and I really enjoyed listening to his stories.

“I remember when Mike drove him back to the hotel, I asked what was that like. Mike said……very surreal,” said Scott Stuart who also worked for the CornBelters at the time.  “That was a very cool night when I got to meet my baseball hero and listen to him speak for 20 minutes.”

Pete Rose was enthusiastic and I didn’t find him to be bitter as one might expect. I was sorry to hear of his death. RIP, Pete,  I will always remember the time I got  to spend with him –and I’m very lucky for that unique opportunity.

–It seems like you can’t get an error any more. When I’m watching a ball and I see an error I start to write it down and then see the scorekeeper has called it an error. In Saturday’s game when Thomas Saggese and Masyn Winn went for the ball.Saggese backed off and Winn bobbled it and then lost it into the outfield. It was clearly an error. I actually used to be an official scorer for many Cardinals games and I know a lot about the rules. I just wonder if they tell them not to give out as many errors these days.

And the Winner for the Best News We’ve Heard Lately…

MLB made an announcement we loved to hear.  The players will wear their primary home and road uniforms at the All-Star Game starting next season, and they will once again represent their “hometown” teams for the game itself, as was the case from the 1930s through 2019.

She’s a Cardinals Fan and A Billy Joel Fan

It was a pretty good crowd for a Sunday, the night the Billy Joel and Sting Concert was moved to due to anticipated weather conditions from Hurricane Helene. Despite the disappointing Cardinals season, Busch Stadium got to end the baseball season on a high note with the concert. Fans including the Kodelja family of Affton loved it.

Veronica Kodelja, 21 had a special night with her new tee shirt watching from her wheelchair seats.

“She loves Billy Joel,” said her mother Diane, who along with father Don got the tickets because they knew how much she would enjoy it. Even though she is non-verbal, she was singing along to all the songs.

“It was Veronica’s third Billy Joel Concert,” said her mother. “She had a blast.”

Veronica has already been to Busch Stadium several times this year as she loves the excitement of the Cardinals games. .

This all just goes to show there is a lot more that goes on at the ballpark besides the miserable Cardinals season. Fans have had a lot of reasons to cheer, whether for concerts, games despite or the exciting young players.

As for Veronica, the game outcomes don’t matter to her. She is just happy to be able to go to the Cardinals games. She loves all the excitement the game day experience provides.

The photo, right, was when she got to go to the Cardinals games with Rainbows for Kids.  The Cardinals have been very generous in donating tickets to Rainbows for Kids so kids like Veronica could attend games.

Thank you to Mick Lite of Arch City Media for the Billy Joel photo with his Cardinals hat on at the recent concert.
