Why National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month (July) is Important and how the Cardinals are working with NAMI on a special night

There are “national days” and “national months” for everything and this month according to the U.S. Government is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. It is important to remove the stigma of mental illness and while this month focusses on minorities we want to be sure to spread the word to everybody. Mental health is no joke, you should take it seriously.

The National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) is a great resource for those who have mental illness or those who love someone who has it.

According to the FDA on FDA.gov:

It is a time to bring awareness to the unique challenges that racial and ethnic minorities in the United States face when it comes to mental illness. In 2020, fewer than one in every two African American adults got care for mental health. In 2018, Asian Americans were 60 percent less likely to receive mental health treatment than non-Hispanic Whites. Obstacles for many include a lack of health insurance, less access to treatment, and stigma.

Mental illness can affect women of all races and ethnicities. Show your support this month and beyond by learning more about mental health. You can also use and share the resources below to help spread awareness about mental health in your communities and families.

Mental health includes emotional, mental, and social well-being. Mental health impacts how a person thinks and feels. It also affects how you act, manage stress, and make choices. When you take care of your mental health, you are better able to cope with stress or challenges.

Sometimes it can be hard to manage  your mental health. If you have noticed a change in thoughts, behaviors, or moods that disrupts your life, talk to your health care provider. You can also contact a mental health specialist or a trusted loved one for help if you have noticed these changes in yourself or in a loved one.

BB Moore Campbell was instrumental in setting July as the month to target minorities. Each July, MHA (Mental Health America promotes the month:”MHA  is proud to recognize Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month (also referred to as BIPOC Mental Health Month). Named in honor of teacher, author, advocate, and journalist Bebe Moore Campbell, this month is a time to focus on the unique strengths and challenges that Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) face when it comes to mental health.”

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) gets into the act with promoting Campbell:

Bebe Moore Campbell left a legacy of championing mental health for underrepresented communities, co-founding NAMI Urban Los Angeles and becoming a national change agent by challenging the status quo.

Through her writing, Bebe Moore Campbell demonstrated that mental health impacts every person, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or nationality.
