Friday’s Game Report: Phillies 7, Cardinals 6 (10 innings)

On a night when the Cardinals put one starting pitcher on the injured list, saw another starter come out of the game early and were without their top relievers, they still took the Phillies into extra innings.
The game didn’t end well, however, as Alec Bohm’s triple off Luis Gastelum drove in two runs to give the Phillies the win in Friday night’s opener of a weekend series in Philadelphia.
The Cardinals had a lead on three separate occasions in the game but couldn’t hold it. They sent the game to extra innings with an RBI single by Bryan Torres in the eighth, then took the lead in the 10th on an RBI single by Jose Fermin.
In the bottom of the 10th, Luis Arraez singled to put runners on first and third and both scored on Bohm’s triple to center.
Before the game, Andre Pallante was placed on the injured list and then starter Hunter Dobbins had to come out of the inning after throwing one pitch in the fifth inning. The team announced that he was suffering from tightness in his right forearm.
Here is how Friday night’s game broke down:
At the plate: In his first game back in Philadelphia since winning the Home Run Derby, Jordan Walker hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning, his 27th of the season … The Cardinals also got a two-run homer from Joshua Baez, his first since his three-homer debut seven days ago. It came on the first pitch he saw in the first inning from Jesus Luzardo … They left six runners on base between the sixth and ninth innings and were 3-of-13 with a runner in scoring position … JJ Wetherholt was 0-of-5 and struck out four times.
On the mound: Dobbins allowed three runs over the first four innings before having to come out of the game … Caleb Ferguson was charged with two runs in the sixth after allowing a pair of singles before he came out of the game. Gordon Graceffo allowed both inherited runners to score as the Phillies regained the lead … Gastelum retired the side in order in the ninth, striking out Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner, before suffering the loss in the 10th.
Key stat: All four of Baez’s homers have come against lefthanded pitchers. He is 5-of-15 against lefthanders to begin his career and is hitless in 13 at-bats against righthanders.
Worth noting: Pallante was placed on the injured list because of inflammation in his right elbow. He will likely miss at least two starts and possibly three. It’s the first time since 2024 the Cardinals have had to place a starting pitcher on the injured list because of an arm issue … Reliever Ryan Fernandez was recalled from Memphis … Masyn Winn did not start for the second consecutive game because of a sore thumb he suffered on a slide during a game in Cincinnati. His status was said to be day-to-day.
Up next: Quinn Mathews will get the start on Saturday night in place of Pallante. The team will have to make another roster move before the game.
