Wednesday’s Game Report: Orioles 8, Cardinals 7

The Cardinals found another frustrating way to lose on Wednesday night.
Trailing the Orioles 7-0 in the second inning, they rallied to tie the game at Busch Stadium with a six-run fifth inning only to then give up the winning run in the ninth.
It was the fifth consecutive loss for the Cardinals.
Riley O’Brien came to start the ninth in the tie game and gave up a leadoff single, threw a wild pitch and Christian Encarnacion-Strand followed with a double that drove in the go-ahead run.
The Cardinals got the tying run to third base with two outs in their half of the ninth but Jose Fermin popped out to end the game.
Here is how Wednesday night’s game broke down:
At the plate: Nolan Gorman homered in the second for the first run for the Cardinals and they sent nine batters to the plate in the six-run fifth that tied the game. Alec Burleson singled in two runs, increasing his RBI total to 98, before Jordan Walker drove in his 97th run with a double and Nathan Church followed with a two-run double. Fermin’s ground out drove in the tying run … The Cardinals left another runner on third base in the sixth … Ivan Herrera had three singles and also walked while Bryan Torres also had a three-hit night.
On the mound: Michael McGreevy retired the first two batters of the game but didn’t get out of the first inning until after he given up five two-out runs. The Orioles increased the lead to 7-0 with a Pete Alonso homer in the second … McGreevy stayed in the game to throw five innings, getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the third … Ryne Stanek allowed a leadoff single in the eighth but was able to strand the go-ahead runner on third before O’Brien was not able to do that in the ninth.
Worth noting: Former Cardinal Tyler O’Neill is not playing in this series because of a rotator cuff strain that landed him on the injured list before Wednesday night’s game.
Up next: The Cardinals will try to avoid being swept in the three-game series in the 1:15 p.m. game on Thursday. The Cardinals have not announced a starting pitcher for the game.
