LEADOFF QUICK HITTERS

SATURDAY, FEB. 21, 2026

Matthew Liberatore worked two scoreless innings, striking out four, but the Cardinals lost their spring training opener today to the Nationals 6-2 in Jupiter, Fla. The big blow was a three-run homer off Ryan Fernandez, Packy Naughton pitched in his first game since July 2024, retiring all three hitters he faced.

The Cardinals announced the signing of infielder Ramon Urias to a one-year contract with a mutual option for 2027. Urias fills the team's quest to add a right-handed bat. Zak Kent was designated for assignment.

Kyle Leahy, trying to win a spot in the rotation, will get the start on Sunday when the Cardinals play the Astros in West Palm Beach.
