Saturday’s Game Report: Diamondbacks 5, Cardinals 3
By Rob Rains
Nolan Arenado had a lot of big hits during his years with the Cardinals but on Saturday, he delivered a big one against them.
Arenado’s two-run double came in a three-run third inning off Dustin May that sent the Diamondbacks to the win over the Cardinals in Phoenix.
It was the second hit for Arenado, whose single in the second helped Arizona score its first run of the game.
May worked five innings, allowing all five runs for the Diamondbacks.
Here is how Saturday’s game broke down:
At the plate: The Cardinals were held to two hits through the first five innings before finally stringing some hits together to score a pair of runs in the sixth, cutting the Arizona lead to 5-2. Jordan Walker drove in the first run with one of three consecutive singles, and four hits in the inning, before the second run scored on a fielder’s choice grounder … Jimmy Crooks homered in the ninth to produce the Cardinals’ final run.
On the mound: May allowed eight hits, walked four and struck out six. One of the runs he gave up scored on a wild pitch … Gordon Graceffo, Justin Bruihl and Matt Svanson did not allow a hit over the final three innings, with the Diamondbacks’ only baserunner reaching on a two-out walk off Briuhl in the seventh.
Key stat: May has made five consecutive starts since his last victory, the one-hit shutout of the Padres on June 15. He has four no-decisions but Saturday’s loss in that stretch with a combined ERA of 9.92 (18 earned runs in 16 1/3 innings).
Worth noting: The homer by Crooks was the 59th hit by the Cardinals in 45 games on the road. They have hit 50 homers in 52 games at Busch Stadium … The two hits by Wetherholt gave him seven multi-hit games in 14 games played so far in July.
Up next: Andre Pallante will get the start on Sunday in the final game of the three-game series.
