LEADOFF QUICK HITTERS

SUNDAY, AUG. 16, 2026

Joshua Baez became the first player in major-league history to hit three homers in his debut, leading the Cardinals to an 8-4 win over the Cubs Saturday at Wrigley Field. His first homer came on the first pitch of his career and he also is the only player in MLB history to homer in each of his first three plate appearances. Only eight players previously had hit two homers in their debut, and only two had hit homers in their first two plate appearances.

Baez hit a two-run homer in the first inning, a solo shot in the fourth and another two-run homer in the sixth. He received a standing ovation when he finally was retired on a fly ball to left in the eighth. Blaze Jordan and Alec Burleson also homered in the Cardinals' five-homer day.

Hunter Dobbins will get the start today in the final game of the series.
